Tips For a Successful Headshot Session (youth)

Headshots are about presenting the best version of yourself so you should wear something age appropriate, comfortable, and something that makes you feel confident!

-Try to get a good night’s sleep the night before your session so you’ll have fresh, bright eyes.

-Keep makeup clean and natural. I recommend at least mascara and lip gloss or a neutral lip tint for anyone over age 12. If you choose to wear foundation, please make sure it’s a good match for your skin tone and is blended well along your jawline. Keep in mind I will do retouching/editing for any blemishes, but I don’t typically remove scars, freckles or moles.

-Wear plain or simple top in a solid color that compliments your skin and eye color. I highly recommend you bring at least 2 choices for tops as I am not always in control of the backdrop color availability, and we may decide one jives better with the background.

            -no busy patterns

-no neon colors (bright, rich colors are great, just not neon)

-no cream, beige, peach or super pale pastels

            -no logos

-black is ok BUT you may not think lint or cat hair is obvious on it, but my camera will find it and I will cry while editing every little piece ;-)

-if you choose black make sure it is a crisp newish black. A black t shirt that has been washed a million times may be the most comfortable thing you own but the dull color will not photograph well.

-it is ok to have texture in your shirt just not busy patterns with multiple colors and avoid really shiny fabrics.

-tank tops or sleeveless shirts can be ok, but the straps must completely cover any bra straps and not look lumpy.

-please make sure your shirt choices are clean and not wrinkled.

-You will most likely have a full waist up shot included in your session so wear pants or shorts that make sense with your chosen shirt in case the waistband is shown.

-For the full waist up shot your arms will be shown so please no watches or hairbands on wrists.

-Jewelry. Simple delicate necklaces, earrings and/or bracelets that represent your personality and aesthetic are fine if they are not too distracting. Please be mindful of making sure any necklaces are straight and rotated correctly prior to each photo.

-Hair should frame your face and reflect how you wear it most of the time.

Please see examples below to get an idea of outfits and how you can expect your headshots to look. Note: headshots are not like a school photo and it is expected to have at least one image that is a very close crop so cutting off the top of the head is intentional :-)
