Tips for a Successful Dance Photoshoot

#1 Relax and have fun! Your job is to just be you and my job is to capture it. We’ll both make adjustments along the way and create some magic!

-       Arrive on time

-       Warm up and stretch upon arrival, especially your back, ankles, and feet

-       Remove any hair ties from your wrist at least 30 minutes prior to your shoot so there won’t be a red mark on your wrist

-       Bring comfortable outfits that make you feel strong and confident. Age appropriate athletic wear, ballet wear, costumes, dresses, and street clothes all have potential for a great photoshoot. Solid colors tend to be more striking than prints. (I will bring a pop up changing tent to on location shoots)

-       I have several dresses and skirts available to borrow for your shoot. Let me know ahead of time if there are any particular ones you would like me to bring (Many of the photos on my Instagram are outfits from my client closet)

-       Bring any dance shoes you think you might want to be photographed in. If part of your shoot will be in pointe shoes, we will do those pictures last in your session. (**Please read specific pointe shoe notes below**)

-       Be prepared for temperature changes and walking between locations. Bring blanket or sweatshirt, water, snack.

-       Always bring at least one leotard and one pair of fitted black shorts

-       Bring any undergarments you need for any outfit you bring. (bra with clear straps, strapless bra, silicone nipple covers, dance briefs or shorts, etc.)

-       Earrings are fine if they are not too long or dangly. Please do not wear any necklaces for your dance photoshoot

-       Hair and makeup are up to you. If you choose to wear your hair down, please bring something to put it up just in case. Especially for acro poses. Bring makeup and gloss for touch ups as needed. (If you are doing a promotion to pointe shoot, or ballet audition photos, I recommend a classic ballet bun and natural makeup)

-       Come prepared with a few pose ideas and practice ahead of time. You don’t need to attempt brand new things though. I want to capture your authentic ability and creative skills that you possess right now

-   Pointe shoes… Safety and injury prevention are always my top priority so please understand that my recommendations  regarding pointe photoshoots are meant to keep you safe. If you have just been promoted to pointe, I offer an in studio option where you can bring your brand new shoes and we will keep them clean and do safe poses that do not include off the barre, full weight bearing en pointe. Once you have been training en pointe for at least 6-8 months, or are in your 3rd pair of pointe shoes, then we can do an outdoor shoot en pointe. BUT you must bring a pair of shoes that you do not intend to wear in your dance studio again. So a shoe that is slightly dead and ready to be retired but not so dead that it won’t be safe for your photoshoot. If you have any questions specifically about pointe shoots please chat with me. They are one of my absolute favorite shoots to do!
